Out of the Closet with Miss Sévinyl

Miss Sévinyl, Julian S. Kalinowski's creamy vinyl muse comes out of the closet on this first day of November 2015.

With hairstyles designed by Bobby Taylor of Pink Bubbles Spa, Miss Sévinyl shows off her versatility as a fashion doll modeling two very different moods: a Cardin-ish mini and a Laura Ashley-like maxi.

The fashions were issued for the Poppy Parker doll by Integrity Toys and now live in Miss Sévinyl's closet.

For more information of the fabulous hairstyles, contact

Voilà! Instant Asian Elegance!

Séverine by Julian S. Kalinowski is a universal beauty whose ability to metamorphose is the stuff of legend. A very special Séverine doll - green skinned and luscious as only she can be - proves the point perfeclty. Who is this attractive yet unsettling creature? Plutonian Séverine? Séverine d'Uranus? Queen of the Milky Way Séverine?

Whatever her true identity is, this very unique Séverine wanted something equally special to wear. And Je suis Séverine seizes the opportunity to pay tribute to dear Franklin Lim Liao who designed the stupendous fashion ten years ago to be modeled by a Silkstone Barbie doll in Barbie Bazaar magazine. Back then, Mr. Lim-Liao, fabulous and ever so creative, fashioned this two-piece cocktail set using a strip of vintage brocade. Upon completion, Mr. Lim-Liao was heard uttering: "Voilá, instant Asian elegance!"

Past and present come together in these photos. Je suis Séverine invites you to treasure the moment and those individuals who provide joy in your life. Here's to Franklin Lim-Liao! If he were still around, he would be smitten with you, Séverine!

Séance

Séverine has been invited to a séance. She dresses appropriately in a Retros burnt gold Lurex sheath in a most dignified length, black gloves, and a sober black headband. Since it's up for grabs as to whose spirit will materialize, Séverine decides to pile on the golden baubles.

In all, it's a winning look! Séverine is sure that once the séance table starts floating, the rooms' chairs are up in mid air, and every one else is scared to the core, she will be thrilled with her fashion choices.

The Many Faces of Séverine

These are the faces of Séverine. Julian S. Kalinowski's muse du jour is every woman. These are some of the faces of the models featured in the current issue of Haute Doll magazine.

Although all are born from the same sculpt, Mr. Kalinowski's intention is to create many variations on a theme - the theme of Séverine. And so the doll transforms while retaining the essence of the character. "Séverine is an amalgam of actresses such as Jeanne Moreau, Catherine Deneuve, and Brigitte Bardot while her name was chosen for its ties to the character Severin in Ritter von Leopold Sacher Masoch's Venus in Furs and also to Catherine Deneueve's character in Luis Buñuel's Belle de Jour", Mr. Kalinowski explains while taking a break from painting feathery eyebrows on a ebony black Séverine doll. Based on Caprice, a French fashion doll manufactured by the company of the same name from 1964 to 1970, Séverine features legs lengthened by 2mm at the calf and 3mm at the thigh, a neck elongated by 2mm, a more detailed re-sculpting of the mouth area and a slight lengthening of the head. The first version of Séverine is made of heavy hard plastic, strung, and models viscose wigs set into a screwed-in scalp, just like Bild Lilli.

The second version, Sévinyl, is the natural progression of Séverine into a more accessible fashion and play doll.

Belles de jour

Miss Sévinyl is getting ready to make her debut. The vinyl version of Julian Kalinowski's groundbreaking and soon to be mythical (less than 150 dolls left) Séverine doll will soon be gracing shelves, cases, and altars the world over. Made of creamy vinyl, each Miss Sévinyl will still be handpainted by the handsome Mr. Kalinowski.

In this photo, a still from Miss Sévinyl's lost first flick Je suis ton déjeuner, two prototype Miss Sévinyl dolls wear tributes (by Juliet Whorton of Dangerousdames Lounge on Etsy) to Yves Saint Laurent's designs for Luis Buñuel's film Belle de Jour.

Who is the gentleman? No one knows. His identity died when the film was destroyed by its jealous-and-gone-mad director.

To find out how to acquire a Miss Sévinyl, stay tuned to this blog or join Séverine's Facebook group Je suis Séverine.

My Make-Up

"I Say A Little Prayer"
 by Aretha Franklin

The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I say a little prayer for you
While combing my hair, now
And wonder what dress to wear, now
I say a little prayer for you

Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, together, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartbreak for me

I run for the bus, dear
While riding I think of us, dear
I say a little prayer for you
At work, I just take time
And all through my coffee break-time
I say a little prayer for you

Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, together, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartbreak for me

I say a little prayer for you
I say a little prayer for you

Forever, forever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever, and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together, together, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only mean heartbreak for me

My darling, believe me
For me there is no one, but you
Please love me, too
I'm in love with you
Answer my prayer
Say you love me, too.
Why don't you answer my prayer?
You know, every day I say a little prayer
I said, I say, I say a little prayer.

Dans la forêt

Dans la forêt lointaine
On entend le coucou.
Du haut de son grand chêne,
Il répond au hibou.
Coucou, coucou, coucou, hibou, coucou.
Coucou, coucou, coucou, hibou, coucou.

The Doctor’s Son ( The First ‘Patron’)

I moved her out of that dreadful place, straight away. I couldn’t bear to see her suffer any longer. She cried, hung on my arm and looked up at me with those clear eyes, not yet hardened by city life or with weeping, and begged me wordlessly to save her. What could I do? Always been a slave to beauty, even in my youth. Especially in my youth.
So, yes, I set her up in a little place on Rue P_____ She skipped like a filly foal when I showed her it - the tiny kitchen, the cozy parlour and the high ceilinged bed chamber.
To be honest, that’s just what she reminded me of, a long legged young animal, still not knowing quite how to manage her limbs, rein in her excitement or control her temper. We had some quarrels, I can tell you and then,ah,the making up......
I adored her, fool that I was. I indulged her, treated her like the pretty, precocious little child she seemed to be. How could I have guessed the cunning behind those tilted almond eyes - those eyes that would fill with tears at the slightest scolding or the sight of a kicked stray dog.
I ignored the gossip of those old crows living in the quarter. I imagined their sharp tongues to be spiteful daggers plunged into the smooth flesh of my darling through pure envy of her beauty.
A gloomy late afternoon in February, the day before St Valentine’s, is when I saw her for what she truly is. It was darkening, both with night and cloud, as I hurried along the back streets, my heart beating with the anticipation of a night in her silken arms. I saw her, there was no mistake. There could not be. She is unique.
She was getting out of the back of a car, slipping on her high heels as she clambered clumsily out onto the wet pavement. I remember thinking that her heels were worn down and I must take her shopping for a new pair; then I saw her stuff her pink satin underwear into her pocket, like the cheap tart she was and blow a kiss to the fat, sweating man groping his way round to the front seat.
Something broke inside me that moment, something which has never been mended and I doubt ever will.
I did not confront her. I watched her skip over to the door and turned my back. I did not want to hear her honeyed voice, once so sweet to me, tell me her lies.
I gave notice to the landlord and never went near the place again. I heard the bailiffs threw her belongings out onto the street. She herself was long gone.
Some months later I visited the cafe on the corner of the street. When I had not been to see her for three days, she had merely packed up her clothes and disappeared. She left the little canary I gave her with the cafe owner’s wife. It pined for her and died. I doubt she would care, the heartless whore.

Séverine's Silent Movie

Julian Kalinowski's Séverine doll made a movie. Way back in 1968. With a wardrobe designed by Juliet Whorton of Dangerousdames Lounge fame. The film got lost but these stills survive. Care to tie them together into a storyline? Dolldom and Je suis Séverine invite you to do so by posting it in the "Comments" section (click on the "No comments" hyperlink) at the bottom of the page. An anonymous jury will select a winner who will receive a beautiful trousseau for the Séverine doll designed by Tania Lawrence.
